Police investigate discovery of body in Palolo Stream

Police say a body found in concrete portion of Palolo Stream may be that of a homeless man in his 50s who lived beneath St. Louis Drive in Kaimuki.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police opened an unattended-death case, pending the results of the autopsy.

Security personnel at Regency Park condominiums, on Waialae Avenue, reported the body in the canal about 5:15 p.m. Thursday, police said.

The canal is about 30 feet deep and a makeshift dwelling was found about 15 feet below street level, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Detective Gary Lahens said the evidence points at the man having slipped and fell into the canal.

He said medications with the man’s name were found in the dwelling and officers in the area also knew him.

Firefighters descended into the dry canal with ropes and a ladder. They wrapped the body in a blue cover beneath the bridge before pulling the body out of the canal.
