Mililani freshman Alyssa Tobita upset both Iolani’s seeded players yesterday to reach this morning’s girls final of the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA Tennis Championships, at Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Maui.

Tobita, the fifth seed, will face a freshman from Waiakea for the title. Top-seeded Sarah Dvorak beat third-seeded Sarah Kukino 6-3, 6-2 in one semifinal. Kukino, from Kauai High, reached last year’s final.

Earlier, Dvorak halted the run of Le Jardin’s Cori Cummings, winning their quarterfinal 6-2, 6-3. The unseeded Cummings upset sixth-seeded Scout Shutter.

Tobita, the Oahu Interscholastic Association champ, took out second-seeded Bobbi Oshiro in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-1. In the afternoon semifinal, Tobita ousted fourth-seeded Kristen Poei by the same score.

On the boys’ side, top-seeded Chas Okamoto, a Kapaa senior, reached the semifinals without losing a game, then swept third-seeded Robin Kiyabu, 6-4, 6-1. Kiyabu, a Punahou senior, is the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion.

Okamoto will face second-seeded Kento Tanaka-Tamaki this morning. The St. Anthony senior defeated fourth-seeded Brandon Lee, of Punahou, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), in the afternoon. Tanaka won a 10-point super-tiebreaker over fifth-seeded James Rivers of Pacific Buddhist Academy in the quarters.

Doubles finals are also at 8:30 a.m. today, along with third-place matches.

ILH champs Roman Kop and Marcel Chan, seeded first, will try to win Kamehameha’s first boys doubles title since 1965. They face seventh-seeded Colin Tseng and Lawrence Ho, of Iolani.

Punahou has clinched its sixth consecutive girls doubles title, claiming both finalists. Top-seeded Jennifer Laws and Sarah Steele play fourth-seeded Ashley Nakaoka and Dani Young.
