Four days of off-and-on rainfall finally caught up to the DOMO turf at Les Murakami Stadium

The Division I championship game of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State Championships between Pearl City and Moanalua was rained out yesterday and will be made up tomorrow night at 6.

Umpires and coaches for both teams met in front of a rain-soaked home plate area approximately 40 minutes after the 7 p.m. scheduled start and determined the field was unplayable.

Anybody who purchased a ticket to last night’s game can use it to re-enter the stadium tomorrow.

The final will be broadcast on OC 16.

The Chargers (13-5) and No. 2 seed Na Menehune (15-1-1) will meet in a rematch of the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship game two weeks ago, won by Moanalua.

Pearl City was expecting to play in its fourth game in as many days. Head coach Mitchell Yamato said his team was excited to play, but welcomed the chance to rest for another two days.

"It helps us a lot … our pitching staff should be able to recover," Yamato said. "I heard this weather is supposed to stay until Monday or Tuesday, so hopefully we get this game in."

Senior Chevas Numata was scheduled to start last night, but the Chargers could go with Isaac Shim, who threw a four-hitter against Kamehameha-Maui on Wednesday.

By virtue of its OIA title, Na Menehune only needed two wins to make the final. Moanalua was in better shape pitching-wise, but just welcomes the opportunity to win the school’s first state baseball championship.

"What can we do with nature?" Na Menehune coach Scott Yamada said. "It’s just one of those things. I think both sides just want to play the game."

In three games, the Chargers are hitting .286 and are led by Numata, who is 3-for-7 with two homers and six RBIs.

Moanalua scored 21 runs in its two wins, led by Ross Hasegawa’s four hits and Bronson Shim’s three RBIs.
