Go fish with the coast guard

Members of the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary are hosting a children’s fishing tournament today that will also include water safety tips and a helicopter search-and-rescue demonstration. The event, “Day on the Docks,” runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii marina in Kaneohe, weather permitting.

Home Lands deputy leaves post

An appointee of Gov. Neil Abercrombie is leaving only months after his appointment.

Bobby Hall, deputy director of the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, will be retiring, board Chairman Alapaki Nahale-a announced Friday.

Nahale-a said he had a lot of respect for Hall’s service to the state and the community.

Hall, 57, a state employee who formerly served as an executive assistant, has also been a member of the Peter Moon Band.

Maui college goes green with degree

The University of Hawaii’s Maui College will offer a new bachelor’s degree in sustainable science management.

The university said the program will have a special focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation. It is to be an interdisciplinary program that aims to train a work force for the emerging green industry in Maui County and elsewhere.

Roof repairs close library on Kauai

Hanapepe Public Library on Kauai will be closed indefinitely beginning May 24 for a roof replacement project. The book drop will be closed beginning Saturday.

Patrons may visit neighboring libraries in Koloa (742-8455) and Waimea (338-6848). Call those libraries for hours of service.
