Hawaii unemployment rate falls to 6.1% in April

Hawaii’s unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent in April after being stuck at 6.3 percent for four months, according to a report released today.

Hawaii was one of 39 states that registered declines in the jobless rate in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. At 6.3 percent Hawaii’s unemployment rate was the 9th lowest in the country, trailing a group of states mostly in the Great Plains with jobless rates ranging from 3.3 percent to 6 percent.

The number of unemployed in Hawaii fell to 38,488 in April from 39,921 in March, while the number of employed grew to 596,888 from 593,976, the BLS reported.

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 9.0 percent in April from 8.8 percent in March.
