Man, 86, killed in hit-run accident

Police are seeking information or witnesses of an early morning hit-and-run accident Monday that killed an 86-year-old man in Waipahu.

Police said the man was walking makai in a marked crosswalk on Awamoku Street at about 2:37 a.m. when a truck hit him and kept going. A witness gave traffic investigators a description of the truck but did not get a license plate number.

The Waipahu man died in the Queen’s Medical Center at 7:03 a.m. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy today.

The death was the 25th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, the same number as at this time last year.

Husband allegedly shoots wife

A 47-year-old man suspected of shooting his wife at their Koloa home Sunday night barricaded himself inside the house before surrendering to police about two hours later.

The shooting was reported at 8:19 p.m., and the woman, 42, managed to escape through a bedroom window, a Kauai County spokeswoman said in a news release.

Medics took her to Wilcox Hospital. Her condition was unknown, the spokeswoman said.

When officers arrived at 8:23 p.m., the suspect barricaded himself in the Olona Street home, the spokeswoman said. Police persuaded him to surrender at about 10:30 p.m., according to the news release.

Police recovered a .38-caliber revolver from the residence, the spokeswoman said.

The man remains in police cellblock in lieu of $516,000 bail.

Car driver is charged in Pahoa death

Hawaii County police charged the 52-year-old driver of a car that struck a motorcycle in Pahoa, killing its passenger and injuring its operator.

Fidel Jeronimo Bautista Jr. of Pahoa was charged last week with manslaughter, first-degree negligent homicide, first-degree negligent injury, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, no operator’s license and no insurance, police said Monday.

The motorcycle passenger, a 61-year-old Vancouver, Wash., woman, died at 12:22 a.m. Thursday at the Hilo Medical Center from injuries received in the accident.

Police identified the woman as Linda McKee. McKee was thrown from the motorcycle.

The 55-year-old New Jersey man who was operating the motorcycle was in serious condition and underwent surgery. The two were not wearing helmets.

Bautista’s bail was set at $60,250, and he remains at the Hilo police cellblock.

Kailua-Kona shark alert is called off

Shark warning signs were taken down Monday morning after a helicopter flyover from Kailua-Kona to Keauhou Bay saw no sign of a large shark.

A woman reported being knocked off her paddleboard Sunday by a large shark, which also took a bite out of the board, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.

The woman was paddleboarding about 20 feet offshore at midday Sunday at Lyman’s Beach in Kailua-Kona when the shark knocked her off the paddleboard, officials said.

The woman was not injured in the attack, but cut her finger as she was getting out of the water onto some rocks.

The Fire Department helicopter flew over the area after the incident but saw no sign of a shark. Police and the Department of Land and Natural Resources posted warning signs Sunday afternoon but did not close the beach.
