McCully man wins Hoku Dream Night
Raphael Vares Jr. of McCully was named winner of the 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano Dream Night Contest sponsored by the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Vares and his wife, Hulali, will attend Sunday’s Na Hoku Hanohano Awards dinner at the Hawai‘i Convention Center and get a prize package that includes a night at the Ala Moana Hotel, 12 CDs and a one-of-a-kind KoAloha ukulele. Vares’ essay was the briefest of the 10 finalists chosen from the 70-plus entries, but the judges said they were moved by his “simple, sweet story.” Read his entry in our Na Hoku Hanohano Awards section at staradvertiser.com.
Designer showcases jewelry and fashions
Terry Nokell, the Logger’s Daughter, is back from Washington for a series of trunk shows of her handmade clothing and jewelry.
She’ll introduce a limited-edition silver moon charm to commemorate her show at Silver Moon Emporium, at the North Shore Marketplace in Haleiwa, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Wednesday, Nokell joins her mom, Lynn Cook, during a 7 p.m. Hawaii Stitchery & Fiber Arts Guild meeting and workshop at the Arts Center at Linekona, 1111 Victoria St. Cook will present an “Art on the Rocks” petroglyph image card class, and Nokell will show her earthenware buttons.
On First Friday, June 3, Nokell will present her Logger’s Daughter semiannual trunk show from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Louis Pohl Gallery, 1142 Bethel St., including gypsy skirts; kimono jackets of washed-silk Italian suiting, embellished with glass beads from Ghana and the Czech Republic; and jewelry incorporating horn, bone, stone and earthenware.
Bliss Lau dances back into town
New York designer Bliss Lau is returning home to Hawaii for two fashion events taking place at the Waikiki Edition Lobby Bar.
First, she’ll share her New York experience during the Hawaii RED magazine and Hifi Fashion Panel, 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25, visit redfashionpanel.eventbrite.com.
Then at 6 p.m. Sunday she’ll present her Fall 2011 “Embraced” collection that debuted in New York in February. Tickets are $10, available at fashionasart.eventbrite.com.
She’ll be casting for ballet dancers to model her pieces from 3 to 5:30 p.m. today at the Lobby Bar. Dancers should bring pointe shoes and a body suit, must be at least age 15 and 5-foot-1. Long hair is a plus.

Trend show shines light on cosmetics
Nordstrom’s Cosmetics Trend Show, “Beautiful Bright Now,” is back, with a long roster of visiting makeup artists, skin and fragrance specialists sharing the latest in beauty and skin care products and techniques.
Among guests are Dr. Zein Obagi, creator of ZO Skincare, Chanel National Artist RC Stephens, ReVive Skincare’s Hylton Lea, M.A.C Pro Artist John Stapleton and NARS International Stylist Janice Daoud.
The show runs from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15, redeemable toward a cosmetics purchase. Plus, receive a gift, while supplies last, for attending the show.
