Crash suspect leaps from H-1 to roof

Police arrested a man for investigation of hit-and-run crashes and of drunken driving Monday night after firefighters helped him down from the Makiki post office roof, where he jumped after running on H-1 Freeway.

Honolulu police Lt. Patrice Gionson said the man emitted a heavy odor of alcohol and might have been involved in two hit-and-run crashes — one in Kapahulu and another on H-1.

Gionson said the man abandoned his vehicle on the westbound side of H-1 before Punahou Street and ran along the freeway. The man then ran from the westbound lanes, hopped over the median, ran across the eastbound lanes and jumped 20 feet down onto the roof of the post office, Gionson said.

Firefighters helped him down about 7:30 p.m. Paramedics were checking the man for injuries.

Pair charged with attempted murder

Two Kalihi men have been charged with attempted murder after an argument at a Mililani church Saturday led to a fight that left one man in the hospital with a knife wound.

Bradley Otto, 23, is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail after being charged with second-degree attempted murder. Clinton Otto, 20, is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail on second-degree attempted murder and terroristic threatening charges.

The fight began at Mililani Presbyterian Church at 95-410 Kuahelani Ave. at 2:44 p.m. when Bradley Otto got into an argument with the brother of another 23-year-old man, police said.

The people involved are associated with a sister congregation that uses the church facilities, said the Rev. Anthony Gamley, interim pastor of Mililani Presbyterian Church. The incident took place in the church parking lot after a wedding, he said.

Bradley and Clinton Otto allegedly took out knives and attacked the 23-year-old man, police said. Bradley Otto allegedly punched the victim and tried to stab him while Clinton Otto allegedly knifed the victim on his left arm, causing a large laceration, police said. Family members detained both men until police arrived.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition and was treated for a knife wound, police said.

Man held in fatal hit-and-run

A 41-year-old Hilo man who was driving drunk killed a mo-ped driver Saturday in a hit-and-run crash, then drove home about a mile away with the mo-ped still beneath his van, Big Island police said.

The crash happened about 10 p.m. at Kinoole Street and Hualalai Road in Hilo.

Keolaokalani W. Kailianu was driving a van south on Kinoole Street when he made a left turn onto Hualalai Road and hit an oncoming mo-ped rider who had the right of way, police said.

Kailianu’s van dragged the mo-ped rider and his mo-ped east along Hualalai Street until the man fell away about a block from the crash at Mauna Kea Street, police said.

Police arrested Kailianu soon afterward at his apartment on Banyan Drive. He was charged over the weekend with first-degree negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and fleeing the scene of a crash. He remained in police custody unable to post $10,500 bail.

Firefighters took the mo-ped driver, who was not wearing a helmet, to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 10:41 p.m. The Police Department urges anyone with information about the crash to call officer Paul Kim at 961-2332.
