Man foiled in attempt to take bag

Hawaii island police are looking for witnesses of an attempted robbery at Hapuna Beach State Park on Sunday.

Police said a man unsuccessfully tried to take a handbag from a woman, 56, in the park’s upper parking lot about 5:15 p.m.

The man is described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a slim build and brown hair parted in the middle. He was wearing a white T-shirt and shorts.

Police want to talk with a woman with whom the victim made contact after the incident and any other witnesses.

Police urge anyone with information about the case to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311.

Lihue-Kapaa bridge helps ease traffic

Kauai is getting a new bridge that should relieve traffic congestion between Lihue and Kapaa.

The state Department of Transportation is scheduled today to dedicate a $29 million project that replaced the old single-lane, northbound bridge on Kuhio Highway with a new two-lane bridge.

The new bridge adds an additional traffic lane and a separated pedestrian and bicycle path across the Wailua River.

Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho and Annette Baptiste, widow of late Mayor Bryan Baptiste, are planning to attend the dedication ceremony at the Aloha Beach Hotel near the bridge.

Kapu on moi to begin

The annual closure of moi fishing season will begin Wednesday and last through August. “The closed season helps sustain moi populations by protecting them during the critical summer spawning period,” said state Land Board Chairman William Aila Jr. Hawaii fishing regulations are available at
