Gov. Neil Abercrombie is spending millions of dollars on construction projects at Hawaii schools and universities.

Abercrombie’s administration said Wednesday the capital improvement projects will create jobs and stimulate the economy.

Spending includes $5 million for design and construction of temporary buildings at various public schools statewide, $4.1 million for a system-wide Information Technology Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and $3.1 million for the University of Hawaii Maui College Science Building.

Other projects cost $3 million for an all-weather track and field facility at Waiakea High School and $2.5 million for the University of Hawaii’s Cancer Research Center.

Many smaller construction plans at various schools also are planned.

Abercrombie has approved the release of about $300 million for work projects since taking office in December.
