Wade needs to replace his top assistant coach

To the Hawaii men’s volleyball recruiting list, add an associate head coach.

Dan Fisher, who served in the No. 2 position the past two seasons, has accepted the head coaching job for the Concordia (Calif.) University women’s team. He starts June 16.

“It’s a good opportunity,” Fisher said of the Concordia program that has competed in the NAIA postseason tournament six of the past seven years.

UH head coach Charlie Wade said he will begin the search for a successor. Jeff Hall, a UH assistant the past year, is expected to apply.

Soon after being named UH’s head coach in June 2009, Wade contacted Fisher. They had met at Pacific, where Wade was head coach of the women’s team while Fisher was an assistant for the men’s program. Fisher was a UH setter for two years.

In joining the Warriors, Fisher promised to stay here a minimum of two years.

“We talked about it on the front end,” Wade said. “He wanted to be a head coach. We’re happy the two years were the bump he needed to become a head coach. Ultimately, you want your assistant coaches to want to become head coaches. That means they’re looking to improve. I’m happy it worked out for everybody.”

Fisher’s UH duties included scouting, recruiting and coordinating some of the practice drills.

The Warriors already have signed commitments from four recruits. Another six players have said they will join, but without signed pledges, their promises are not binding. UH can only comment on players who have signed commitments.

“For men’s volleyball, this is about as good of a time as it can be” to switch jobs, Fisher said.

Wade said Hall, who has served in an expanded role in recruiting, can handle the summer duties until a permanent replacement is selected.

“At this point, the program is in pretty good shape,” Fisher said.

He added: “Just living here four years — and I count my years as a player here — have been a real special time in my life. The more time you spend here, the people and the culture get into your skin. It’s a place I know will always be home for me.”
