A 54-year-old woman has died of injuries suffered when she was shot in an apparent random attack this morning in Kaimuki, police said. Officers arrested a 28-year-old Haleiwa man as the suspect in the early morning roadway shooting spree from Kaimuki to Aiea in which three people were shot.

Toby Stangel, of a Kilioe Place address, was in custody.

Police said officers recovered a semiautomatic handgun and that the gun is not registered.

Stangel was taken to the Pearl City police substation after police arrested him on the H-1 freeway near the Kaamilo Street overpass about 1 a.m.

For nearly six hours the crime scenes on Kapiolani Boulevard, Houghtailing exit and Moanalua freeway and some westbound sections of the H-1 freeway were closed as police processed the evidence. All roads have been reopened.

Maj. Richard Robinson, head of the criminal investigation division, said the suspect is facing first- and second-degree attempted murder charges as well several firearms violations. His record includes five misdemeanor convictions, Robinson said.

Taken to a hospital in critical condition were a 54-year-old woman and a 24-year-old woman. A 38-year-old man was in stable condition.

The 54-year-old woman died later at a hospital, police said.

Robinson said the shootings began at 12:43 a.m. in Kaimuki, at Kapiolani Boulevard and Kapahulu Avenue, and continued on the H-1 freeway.

He said the shootings appear to be random acts. “There is no connection between the suspects and victims,” Robinson said, “and no motive.”

Robinson said that at 12:43 this morning the suspect stopped behind several cars that were stopped at Kapiolani Boulevard and Kapahulu Avenue.

The suspect got out his car, walked up to the line of cars and shot at two vehicles. A 21-year-old man in the first vehicle was not hit. A 54-year-old woman in a second vehicle was shot multiple times, including in the head, and was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, Robinson said. Her passenger, a 16-year-old girl, was not injured.

“He walked up and opened fire,” Robinson said.

Workers in the nearby Foodland supermarket said they heard five shots, followed several minutes later by sirens.

Ten minutes later on the H-1 between the Likelike Highway and the Houghtailing Street exits, the suspect, driving a late model BMW, struck a car driven by a 24-year-old woman from behind, then pulled along side of the car.

“He opened fire again,” Robinson said.

The woman driver was taken in “stable, but critical condition” to the hospital, Robinson said.

A sister of the woman identified her as Amielou Asuncion, 24. The sister said Asuncion was driving to work at the time and was shot twice in the shoulder.

A 38-year-old man slowed down to see what was happening and was shot by the suspect, Robinson said. He is in “serious condition” in the hospital.

At 12:58 this morning the suspect fired at two police officers who were conducting a traffic stop on Moanalua Freeway near the Aiea off-ramp.

“No one was injured,” Robinson said.

Several minutes later at 1 a.m. police officers saw the suspect’s BMW stopped on the freeway near the Kaamilo Street overpass in Aiea.

He was arrested and taken to the Pearl City substation and then transfered to the main police station this morning.

Stangel’s record includes five misdemeanor convictions, but he has no record of serving time in prison. His convictions include property damage, drunken driving, driving without a license, and speeding. His last conviction was  criminal property damge in 2006 where he was sentenced to 100 hours or probation, fined $150 and subject to one year of probation.
