Hawaii County and Honolulu police are investigating an air gun shooting on the Big Island that left a 16-year-old boy in critical condition.

The shooting occurred Saturday at about 5:11 p.m. in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision in Puna, Hawaii County police said. Responding officers found the boy unconscious with a chest wound.

The victim was flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu because of the severity of his injury.

Big Island detectives say a high-powered air gun may have accidentally discharged. The incident is classified as a home accident.

Honolulu police say Hawaii County police have asked for their help in the investigation.
