Lost hiker calls firefighters from work this morning

A lost hiker, who had Honolulu firefighters searching for hours Sunday evening, was back at work this morning after he walked out of the Manoa Falls trail last night.

Firefighters who didn’t know he was safe resumed the search at 5:45 this morning, Capt. Robert Main, a fire department spokesman said.

Apparently, the male hiker did know that search had resumed and didn’t call the fire department until 7:30 this morning, Main said.

Two hikers told fire crews that they had heard a man calling out for help and requesting an ambulance early Sunday afternoon above the Manoa Trail.

Fire search and rescue teams responded to the hillside and also heard a man’s cries for help, but were unable to find anyone. The search was called off last night because of darkness and resumed at first light this morning.

Main said what apparently happened was that the man kept walking while he was calling for help after he got lost.

"The lesson here is that if you call for help, stay put," Main said.

The fire department helicopter made numerous landings at Manoa District Park Sunday and ferried search teams up to the trail.
