Auditor to go over state Tax Department’s procedures

The state Department of Taxation plans to hire an independent auditor to review its revenue reporting and accounting policies and procedures after systemic problems have been found in its reports.

Tax Director Fred Pablo says he’s noticed unusual reporting in monthly tax revenue reports since he took office six months ago.

A December 2010 report by the state auditor also pointed to some organizational problems in the department.

Pablo said in a statement Friday the department must ensure the proper safeguards are in place and that the revenue reporting system is accurate and understandable.

The department has formally asked professional auditing firms to submit letters of interest by July 13. It aims for the review to be finished by Aug. 12.
