Lei draping ceremonies will be held in Hilo and Honolulu on Kamehameha Day, while most government offices are scheduled to be closed.

The state holiday day honoring King Kamehameha the Great — the warrior who united the Hawaiian Islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii — is June 11. Because the date falls on a Saturday this year, government offices are observing the holiday on Friday.

City, county and state offices are closed. Federal offices are open, with the exception of U.S. District Court.

The King Kamehameha Celebration Commission is due to hold lei draping ceremonies at King Kamehameha statues in Honolulu and Hilo. Long strands of flowers will be placed on the statues in a tradition that dates back more than a century.

The annual King Kamehameha Day parade will be held tomorrow beginning in downtown Honolulu and continuing through Kapiolani Park.
