National Guard soldier dies following Humvee crash

A 44-year-old Hawaii Army National Guard soldier critically injured in a June 7 Humvee accident on the Big Island has died, the Hawaii Army National Guard said today.

Sgt. Michael Geisler, 44, of Ewa Beach, died yesterday afternoon at Queen’s Medical Center, according to a statement from the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Geisler was flown to  the Queen’s Medical Center from the North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea a day after the crash on Old Saddle Road.

Geisler  swerved to avoid a goat which had jumped on the road at about 6:40 p.m. on June 7, Hawaii County police said.  The vehicle ran off the right side of the road, up an embankment. Geisler was ejected from the vehicle and pinned underneath, police said.

A 21-year-old soldier from Kalihi, who was a passenger in the Humvee, was not hurt.

The accident occurred on Saddle Road, about half mile west of the 36-mile marker, which is between the Army post’s main gate and Bradshaw Army Air Field,

Geisler was assigned the 29th Brigade Combat Team’s B Battery, 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery.

A Hawaii Army National Guard casualty assistance officer is assisting the family.  Funeral arrangements are pending.

About 2,000 Hawaii Army National Guard soldiers are currently conducting their annual training at Pohakuloa.
