Big Isle man, 63, gets month in jail for kicking police officer
HILO >> A 63-year-old Big Island man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for kicking a police officer.
John Franklin Houlton of Puna was sentenced last week to 30 days in jail and a fine of $85 after he was found guilty of harassment and misdemeanor assault on a law enforcement officer, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported today.
Circuit Judge Glenn Hara gave him a week to make arrangements to care for his animals on the condition that he reports to jail sober.
In 2008, Houlton’s neighbor told police that Houlton had been throwing fist-sized rocks at his van. Houlton reportedly kicked Puna Patrol Officer Jenny Lee in the shoulder.
Houlton rejected a plea deal in which he would have been sentenced to 30 days.
A jury found him guilty last month.
