State prosecutors have filed charges against a former elementary school secretary alleging she stole $68,000 from her school for personal use.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that Denise Hayashi of Waipahu forged the signature of the Pearl Ridge Elementary school principal on checks belonging to the school’s account between January 2008 and May 2011.

A criminal complaint filed Monday alleges one count of first-degree theft and 98 counts of second-degree forgery.

The state attorney general’s office says first-degree theft is punishable by up to 10 years in jail and a $25,000 fine. Second-degree forgery is punishable by up to 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Hayashi is due to be arraigned at Circuit Court in Honolulu on Monday.
