Philippine church group sues Arroyo over killings
MANILA, Philippines >>A Protestant group has sued former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo over the killings of at least six church members allegedly by security forces under her control when she was in office.
United Church of Christ in the Philippines secretary general Bishop Reuel N.O. Marigza said many pastors and church members were harassed, detained or tortured. The bishop said his group was labelled an “enemy of the state” under the Arroyo administration.
A spokeswoman for Arroyo would not comment before seeing a copy of the complaint filed Thursday.
Church spokeswoman Rebecca Lawson says the group is seeking 5.4 million pesos ($124,000) in total damages.
