Surfers turned out for a south shore swell at breaks such as Ala Moana Bowls. The surf is expected to increase overnight and peak with wave faces of more than 8 feet Wednesday.

A high surf advisory is in effect for south-facing shores of all islands until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Waves faces of 5- to 8-feet are expected today, with surf peaking at 8- to 10-feet Wednesday.

Forecasters say surfers could see double-overhead waves at select locations through Thursday.

The National Weather Service says the swell is from a storm system southeast of New Zealand last week.

The high surf advisory means large breaking waves will affect exposed beaches, reefs, jetties and channel entrances.

Dangerous rip currents and localized beach erosion could occur.
