Big Island police seek driver in fatal hit-and-run

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver of a Chevy Blazer that struck and killed a 41-year-old man in a hit-and-run in South Kona on June 10.

Police recovered the silver or pewter 2002 Chevrolet Blazer, license number JGX 345, in Captain Cook on June 12.

It might have been operated by a Hispanic man with the nickname Mijo who might frequent South Kona, police said.

The crash occurred on the Hawaii Belt Road three-tenths of a mile south of the 108-mile marker.

Police identified the victim, Bounxou Saychantha, on Tuesday through fingerprints.

Anyone with information about the driver is asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. Anonymous tipsters may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 or 329-8181.
