Officer allegedly kept submitted gun
A Maui police officer was charged Thursday with theft for allegedly failing to turn in a firearm to the Police Department that a member of the public had voluntarily turned over to him.
Sean Marzoeki, 32, who was a patrol officer in Kihei at the time of the incident, turned himself in at the Wailuku police station at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Marzoeki was charged with two counts of first-degree theft and two counts of failure to acquire a firearm permit.
He was charged on the strength of a warrant of arrest and information charging.
Lt. Wayne Ibarra said the warrant was issued after an investigation revealed Marzoeki failed to submit the firearm that was voluntarily turned over to him a few months ago.
Ibarra said he did not have the details of exactly when and why the individual wanted to turn the firearm in to the Police Department.
Police released Marzoeki on $5,000 bail.
The Maui Police Department has placed the 10-year police veteran on restricted duty. He joined the department on Aug. 27, 2001. Marzoeki is scheduled for arraignment and plea July 7 in Circuit Court.

Police seek SUV driver in fatality
Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver of a Chevy Blazer that struck and killed a 41-year-old man in a hit-and-run in South Kona on June 10.
Police recovered the silver or pewter 2002 Chevrolet Blazer, license number JGX 345, in Captain Cook on June 12.
It might have been operated by a Hispanic man with the nickname Mijo who might frequent South Kona, police said.
The crash occurred on the Hawaii Belt Road three-tenths of a mile south of the 108-mile marker.
Police identified the victim, Bounxou Saychantha, on Tuesday through fingerprints.
