Wong signs with Cardinals; gets $1.3 million bonus
Former University of Hawaii second baseman Kolten Wong signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday and will take batting practice with the club today before reporting to Quad Cities on Monday.
The first-round draft pick will receive a reported signing bonus of $1.3 million. He will play for the low Class A Quad Cities team.
“I’m excited to get my professional career started,” Wong said in a press release by the Cardinals. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play professional baseball. Hopefully some day soon I will be playing for the Cardinals here in St. Louis.”
Wong will play second base. He was the 22nd player selected in the major league baseball draft. The 20-year-old Hilo native hit .358 for the Hawaii Rainbows with 25 homers and 145 RBIs.
