Repairs temporarily shut Diamond Head summit trail
The state plans to close the Diamond Head summit trail for an afternoon this week for ongoing renovations.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says the Oahu trail will close at noon on Thursday so a contractor can bring in a helicopter to deliver metal stairs and handrails to the lower lookout area. The trail is due to reopen as usual at 6 a.m. Friday
Contractors are currently working on the third phase of trail renovations, which includes repairing the lookout area at the base of the trail’s long stairway. When this is done, construction will begin on a new loop section of the summit trail.
The second phase of renovations included surfacing and drainage work to address erosion and heavy use of the existing summit trail.
