Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi wants 13 furlough days a year for the next two years.
West Hawaii Today reported today Kenoi has asked the state’s largest public-sector labor union to strike a separate deal with the county.
He is also asking for a 5 percent pay cut for Hawaii Government Employees Association workers in police, fire and other divisions where furloughs wouldn’t be possible.
The mayor’s letter earlier this month to HGEA seeks a supplemental agreement to the contract negotiated at the state level during collective bargaining.
The letter follows a County Council resolution asking for Hawaii County to be able to keep furloughs in place.
