Unreported tank costs hotel $50,000
The state has fined a Waikiki hotel $50,000 for not notifying the Health Department that an underground storage tank was installed.
The state Department of Health announced Friday that a violation notice has been issued to Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki for not reporting that the 4,000-gallon tank was installed in 1990.
New underground storage tanks must be reported to the Health Department within 30 days of installation.
The Health Department regulates underground storage tanks that store petroleum or hazardous substances.
Officials noticed the tank listed in records reviewed in September.
An investigation revealed the tank was never reported to the Health Department.
