Magazine names Danielson All-American

University of Hawaii senior outside hitter Kanani Danielson was selected to the COBRA Magazine women’s volleyball preseason All-America first team.

Danielson is a two-time AVCA first team All-America selection and earned her second consecutive WAC Player of the Year honor last season.

The Kamehameha Schools alum is the 17th player in the program’s history to eclipse 1,000 career kills.

Baker joins Wahine hoops staff

Lindsey Baker, who was a member of the NCAA office during the 2009-10 season and has nearly a decade of experience in college athletics, has joined the University of Hawaii women’s basketball staff as director of operations.

"We are excited to have Lindsey join our ohana," UH coach Dana Takahara-Dias said in a release. "She brings extensive knowledge and experience having worked in the Big Ten Conference and in the NCAA. She has also been part of basketball at the elite level, having served as the manager for a Purdue team that played in the national championship."

Cabalar leads Barbers Point golf

Campbell High senior and state high school champion Rudy Cabalar shot even-par 72 Friday and takes a two-shot lead into the final round today of the Barbers Point Invitational at Barbers Point Golf Course.

Cabalar had three birdies and an eagle for a two-round total of 141 and leads first-round co-leader Bou-An Fujieki (74) by two shots. The leaders tee off at 8:48 a.m. today.

Klaneski to hold second free skills clinic

Eddie Klaneski, a former University of Hawaii star safety and new Damien football coach, will hold another free basic skills football clinic for youngsters from Kalihi.

The recommended minimum age is 10 for the clinic, which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday on Damien field.

Klaneski will focus on skills for defensive backs, wide receivers and quarterbacks as he did last week. For information, parents can email Klaneski at klaneski@damien.edu.

Owens shines in CFL loss

Former Hawaii football player Chad Owens finished with 225 all-purpose yards, including an 89-yard kickoff return, for Toronto in a 40-17 loss to Montreal on Friday night in a Canadian Football League game.

Owens had four catches for 42 yards and returned five punts for 69 yards, averaging 13.8 yards per return. He also returned two kickoffs for 114 yards, including an 89-yarder that set up the Argonauts’ first touchdown.
