Phone outage could take week to repair

About 100 Hawaiian Telcom customers in the Kapalama area might have to go a week without telephone and Internet service.

The services, out since Friday, are expected to be restored by Saturday, a company spokesman said.

The outages, centered on Houghtailing Street near Aupuni Street, were caused by an underground cable damaged by a water leak from a broken pipe. The company said it may have been caused by construction work in the area.

Hawaiian Telcom apologized for the inconvenience to the affected customers and thanked them for their patience.

Customers who have yet to report their loss of service should call the company’s 24-hour repair center at 643-6111.

Maui officials tout tourism in South Korea

WAILUKU » Maui government leaders say they used a taxpayer-funded trip to South Korea to promote island tourism.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and Maui County Council Chairman Danny Mateo led the trip, which lasted from July 5 to 13.

The Maui News reports that the county paid $5,300 in airfare for Arakawa, Mateo, Finance Deputy Director Jeremiah Savage and Deputy Chief of Staff Kit Zulueta. Arakawa’s and Savage’s wives paid their own travel expenses on the trip.

Mateo says Koreans are interested in visiting Hawaii, but their knowledge of the state is limited to Waikiki Beach. He says he wanted to expand their vision to include Maui.

Kauai police target violations on vehicle equipment

The Kauai Police Department said it will increase efforts to enforce motor vehicle laws regarding headlights, tire size, splash guards, bumpers and other equipment.

"We have been receiving complaints from the community, particularly in regards to headlights, oversized tires and height restrictions of motor vehicles," said Capt. Michael Contrades of the Patrol Service Bureau.
