Flags to fly at half-staff Aug. 15 for ex-mayor Matayoshi
Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered that all U.S. and Hawaii state flags be flown at half-staff at state buildings on Aug. 15 in honor of the late Hawaii County Mayor Herbert Matayoshi.
Matayoshi, who was Hawaii island’s longest-serving mayor, from 1974 to 1984, died July 12 at age 82.
A proclamation issued by Abercrombie said Matayoshi was an advocate for infrastructure improvements and supporter of small businesses in the downtown Hilo area. Matayoshi was also instrumental in the creation of social service programs such as the county’s Elderly Activities Division.
