In its first month of operation, the Honolulu Police Department’s Facebook page appears to have found its niche in the tenuous world of social media.
The page, which was officially introduced on July 1, is intended to provide a forum for dialogue on issues important to the safety of the community as well as information on community events, enforcement and safety programs, according to the department.
In recent days, the page has offered brief synopses of crimes and traffic accidents, provided links to programs and services such as the Keiki I.D. program, posted photos of HPD-sponsored events like the recent Project Think kids’ tour of Nalo Farms, and engaged in polite online discussion of topics including police integrity.
The page has garnered 1,289 "likes" to date.
HPD Capt. Andrew Lum said a recurring theme of the post will be items that bolster public confidence in the department.
"We want to build confidence … that the department is doing what it can to make the community safe," he said.
The page will allow for more dialogue between the department and the public, part of Chief Louis Kealoha’s strategic plan, Lum said.
