Environmental groups sue to stop Hawaii fish farm
Two environmental organizations are suing the federal government to have a permit for a fish farm off the Big Island declared illegal and invalid.
KAHEA and Food and Water Watch Inc. are the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Honolulu on Tuesday.
The lawsuit alleges that a permit the National Marine Fisheries Service issued to Kona Blue Water Farms, Inc. last month violates the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and should be declared illegal.
It also charges the National Marine Fisheries Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act by failing to produce an Environmental Impact Statement for the project. It argues the permit should be declared invalid as a result.
The permit allows Kona Blue to grow fish at a farm in federal waters.
