Proposed remapping would pit incumbent vs. incumbent
Six state representatives would be placed into House districts with another incumbent under a proposed redistricting plan presented Wednesday by the state Reapportionment Commission.
No incumbent senators appear to be affected.
The preliminary plans drawn up by the commission’s technical committee are scheduled to be voted on Friday before going to public hearings beginning Aug. 30.
House members that would be placed together are Reps. Kymberly Pine and Rida Cabanilla in West Oahu, Reps. Barabara Marumoto and Mark Hashem in East Oahu and Reps. Mark Nakashima and Jerry Chang on the Big Island.
One issue to be determined before the plans go out to public hearings is the boundary line for the state’s congressional districts on Oahu. The technical committee submitted two proposed plans on where to draw the line separating the 1st Congressional District, representing urban Honolulu, and the 2nd district, representing rural Oahu and the neighbor islands.
