Tesoro to restart refinery after power loss

Tesoro Corp. plans to restart its 95,000 barrel-a-day Hawaii refinery today after a power loss Tuesday forced workers to shut all units.

The power was disrupted due to a failure in an electrical substation, Mike Marcy, a Martinez, California-based Tesoro spokesman, said in an e-mail.

“After assessing the status of all units overnight, they will be safely brought back online and restored to normal, targeted (unspecified) operations today,” said Marcy. “It is not anticipated that there will be any impact as a result on Tesoro’s ability to meet its local product supply commitments.”

Tesoro notified the National Response Center that it released gases in a flare at its Kapolei refinery after the power loss.

U.S. refineries must notify the response center if they release hazardous substances in excess of reportable quantities, according to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund.
