Several juvenile males have been arrested in connection with an investigation into allegations of multiple cases of sex assault involving students at the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind.
The investigation by the Honolulu Police Department’s Sex Assault Detail involves multiple juvenile suspects and victims, said HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu.
"Several juvenile males have been arrested" at various times going back several months, Yu said. It’s not clear whether other arrests are expected or whether suspects include adults.
The school is part of the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and the Blind and operates under the auspices of the state Department of Education. It had an enrollment of about 70 in January 2009, according to the school’s website.
It serves students ages 3 to 20 who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted or have a combination of the disabilities.
The school is on five acres at the border of Waikiki and Kapahulu and is made up of seven main instructional buildings and three auxiliary buildings, the school’s website said. A dormitory is available to house students from the neighbor islands.
Neither the school nor DOE officials could be reached after business hours Thursday.
KHON2 News interviewed Hawaii attorney Michael Green, who said he has spoken to two parents. Green was quoted as saying that "there’s probably at least 30 to 40 families that are involved, maybe more."
Green could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
Yu said she could not say how many youths were arrested or whether they are in custody.
She urged parents and students with information to contact school authorities or police.
