Maui team 0-3 at LLWS regional
Central East Maui’s chances of advancing in the Little League Baseball West regional dimmed greatly with a 5-3 loss to Washington (Utah) on Monday in San Bernardino, Calif.
Central East Maui fell to 0-3 in the six-team tournament with one game left to play on Wednesday. The top four teams qualify for Friday’s semifinals.
Central East Maui, which entered Monday’s game with just two hits in its first two games of the regional, broke out for 11 hits against the Utah champion. But five errors contributed to a third straight loss.
"It was great to see the kids hit the ball finally, but the errors … ," Maui coach Bernard Kaupe said.
Washington led 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth when Ka‘o Mindoro hit a one-out solo home run. After giving up an unearned run in the top of the sixth, Maui put two runners on with two out in the bottom of the inning. Orion Miyasato-Farias then lined out to right field to end the game.
"He hit it hard, but right at ’em," Kaupe said. "Hard luck."
Central East Maui has a day off today and closes pool play on Wednesday against Red Bluff (Northern California).
