Mo-ped rider dies after car collision
A 21-year-old man died Tuesday after the mo-ped he was driving collided with a car near the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
Erin Kalamau was identified as the victim.
The accident occurred at 9:04 a.m. in the 2400 block of Puowaina Drive, which leads to the cemetery.
Tour buses and other vehicles were unable to enter the cemetery for three hours because the road and entranceway were blocked.
Traffic was rerouted in the area of Hookui and Auwaiolimu streets because of the accident investigation.
Suspect allegedly tries to drive over victim
A 21-year-old woman was arrested for attempted murder Tuesday morning after a woman she allegedly tried to run over several days ago spotted her in the parking lot of the Food Pantry in Waikiki, police said.
The victim, 22, reported that after an argument with the suspect in Waikiki at about 8:35 p.m. Saturday, the other woman tried to run her over with her car on Kuhio Avenue, police said. At one point, the victim said, she was on the hood of the vehicle, but was not seriously hurt, police said.
Shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday, the victim spotted the suspect in the Food Pantry parking lot, flagged down police and had her arrested.
The suspect was held pending charges.
Arson suspected in Hawaii island blazes
Hawaii County police are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or persons who set three recent brush fires in the Kau district.
The Punaluu area fires Monday, Sunday and Aug. 3 appear to have been intentionally set, police said.
The fires burned along Highway 11 near Ninole Loop and the 55-mile marker. The fires burned roughly 82 acres.
Firefighters were mopping up Tuesday.

Body from canal ID’d as Mississippi man’s
The man whose body was found Saturday morning in the Ala Wai Canal has been identified by the city Medical Examiner’s Office as William Houseworth, 26, of Jackson, Miss.
But medical examiners have deferred the cause and manner of his death pending further investigation.
Police are investigating the case as an unattended death.
Burglary suspect arrested after resisting
A 31-year-old man wanted on suspicion of burglary tried to flee arrest Tuesday morning, eluding police in Kailua at for more than a half-hour before officers, with the help of the Honolulu Police Department helicopter, were able to capture him.
Police said they located the suspect at a Kailua residence at about 9:40 a.m. When the man saw police approaching the house, he fled on foot. The man sustained undisclosed injuries when he resisted arrest as he was captured, police said.
The man has 16 prior convictions, police said.
