BRIEFS
Ready and able
Longtime Leilehua assistant coach Mark Kurisu has handled his new duties — stepping in for head coach Nolan Tokuda, who is on paternity leave — with vigor.
The Mules rallied for a 34-all tie against Alaska powerhouse Service on Thursday, and Kurisu congratulated both teams after the battle on a well-played, sportsmanlike game. He was especially happy to see the effort of the Mules after starters Jeremiah Andrade and Russell Siavii left with concussions.
“Our staff has done a great job. I give credit to defensive coordinator Darren Matsumiya,” Kurisu said.
“Service was missing eight guys, but they have a lot of speed and big guys out there. They’re athletic, but also good, respectful young men. I love their kids.”
Watching from afar
Reggie Torres may have been far removed from his normal place at a Kahuku football game, but it still didn’t change his perspective. After watching Kahuku’s 26-0 win over Waianae from the wrestling room beyond a corner of Carleton Weimer Field, he saw great potential and room for improvement.
“We made a lot of mistakes, but we capitalized on Waianae’s mistakes. We’re young up front and Waianae is strong up front. We were able to use everybody,” he said. “It’s good. We’ve got things to work on.”
The school suspended Torres from the head coaching position three weeks ago after an incident involving JV players at preseason football camp. Torres can’t comment on the disciplinary action, but misses the program immensely.
