Eastside (Oahu) is the lone remaining undefeated United States team at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md.
More important, it’s the first team to clinch a berth in the U.S. semifinals on Friday.
Nicolas Benner went 3-for-3, including an inside-the-park home run, and drove in five runs. He also combined with two other pitchers on a one-hit shutout in a 13-0 victory over the Kennewick (Wash.) American All-Stars on Tuesday.
Combined with Charles County (Md.) losing 4-3 to the Hudson (N.H.) All-Stars, Eastside assured itself one of the top two spots in the American Division regardless of the outcome of today’s game against Texas Tri-Counties.
"We might make some changes (for today’s game), but haven’t decided on anything," Eastside coach Charles McNicoll said. "Still focused on taking it one game at a time."
Ryne Yamashiro had three doubles and scored three times on Tuesday. Eastside is averaging 11.3 runs in its first three games.
It scored all 13 of its runs on Tuesday in the first three innings.
Benner, Michael Viola and Blaine DeMello combined on the one-hitter, with Benner earning the victory. Benner also doubled twice.
Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi hit into his first out of the tournament but is still batting .778 (7-for-9) with four doubles and five RBIs through three games.
Yamashiro is hitting .750 (6-for-8) with a home run and six runs scored.
All 14 members of the 12-and-under team from Oahu played in Tuesday’s win.
