Buoys taken from sandbar safety zone
Buoys marking the safety zone for the Kaneohe sandbar are scheduled to be re-installed this morning after four of six were removed following the Fourth of July weekend.
One of the orange and white buoys was recently found in the area, but in deeper waters than where it originally was placed, according to Deborah Ward, spokeswoman for the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Damage to or removal of the buoys is considered a petty misdemeanor that carries penalties of up to a $1,000 fine and up to 30 days in jail.
The state said it will strictly enforce a ban on alcohol at the sandbar, Ahu o Laka, for the upcoming Admission Day weekend.
An emergency rule was implemented in June that prohibits alcohol, drugs and disorderly conduct during three-day weekends, which includes state holidays, because of overcrowding and fights.
