U.S. women beat Germany
The U.S. women’s national volleyball team, with two starters with Hawaii ties, swept Germany 25-10, 25-18, 25-23 on Friday to begin pool play in the FIVB Grand Prix in Hong Kong.
Middle blocker Heather Bown (Hawaii) had two kills and a block, and setter Lindsey Berg (Punahou) had two aces, a block and 27 assists. Libero Tamari Miyashiro did not play.
The second-ranked Americans play Italy today.
Goodwill baseball tournament opens
The fourth annual Japan-Hawaii Goodwill Baseball Tournament opens today with games at Mid-Pacific field and Les Murakami Stadium
The tournament features 15-year-old division teams from Osaka and Kansai, as well as En Fuego, a select team with players from California, Washington, Alaska and Canada. The Hawaii teams include Mid-Pacific and Punahou.
There are single games at 12:30 p.m. at Mid-Pacific today and tomorrow. The tripleheaders at Murakami today and tomorrow begin at 4 p.m.
There is no admission charge.
