Air conditioning at airport restored
The air conditioning has been restored to all but one small area at Honolulu International Airport this afternoon.
Dan Meisenzahl, transportation department spokesman, said repairs to a 2,000-foot-long concrete pipe, which loops around the terminal and supplies cold water that cools the airport, were completed late last night.
A second leak detected Wednesday night that shut down the system in the international arrivals area was not as extensive as originally believed, he said.
Meisenzahl said air conditioning had been restored in all but a portion of that one area by this afternoon.
The air-conditioning system went out about 2 p.m. Tuesday after a break in an old chilled-water pipe that was installed in 1972.
Meisenzahl said most of the airport has cooled down, and portable fans and air-conditioners are in the one area still not on line.
