Fire destroys abandoned house in Kalihi Valley

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed an abandoned house Friday in Kalihi Valley.

The fire started about 2:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of Kalihi Street in a three-story home, set back about a hundred yards from the street and surrounded by trees, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 15 minutes.

The fire gutted the home, but didn’t spread to the trees because they were still green, Seelig said.

Witnesses told firefighters that house attracted homeless people.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
