The Local Divas — Carole Kai, Melveen Leed and Nohelani Cypriano — will reunite for the first time in a decade to salute Loyal Garner, their beloved fourth member, in a New Year’s Eve reunion at the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Coral Ballroom.
The evening will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of Garner, the celebrated "Lady of Love" who arranged all the group’s music. She was 55 when she died of colon cancer on Nov. 15, 2001.
"We wanted to do a section in the show where we pay tribute to her," Kai said of Garner, who won’t be replaced. "No one can fill Loyal’s place at this time; it wouldn’t be quite right for the three of us to do that for our first reunion."
Kai is working with the Hilton’s GM Jerry Gibson to stage this tribute. "I’m enjoying seeing our magic come together as we interact with each other. We’ve been laughing a lot and crying a little about Loyal, missing her. It’s going to be a funny and touching show," she said.
Rehearsals have been under way for a couple of weeks. Kai is taking voice lessons from Neva Rego to recondition her pipes. "I know Loyal is saying to me, ‘Good girl, you didn’t give up,’" she said.
A seven-piece band will be featured, augmented by taiko drummers, and Kai also is getting piano coaching from Ginny Tiu, with industry vet Ronnie Miyashiro advising on song selection. …
