Maui police have charged a man with the Tuesday robbery of the American Savings Bank in Kahului.

Jess J. McGowan, 44, is scheduled to appear Thursday in court on a first-degree robbery charge.

McGowan was arrested in the area of Hale Nanea, off Amala Place, in Kahului, nearly four hours after the robbery.

Police said a man entered the American Savings Bank, 73 S. Puunene Ave., about 11:35 a.m. and demanded money from the teller.  The male, who requested that the money be placed in an envelope, informed the teller that he had a weapon, but no weapons were observed.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, the male exited on foot and fled in an unknown direction.

McGowan was being held on $50,000 bail.
