The Pickle Lady has class in session
The Pickle Lady, Leonora Ching, will present a preserving and pickling demonstration and sampling at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Kaneohe Public Library.
Ching will cook simple recipes made from scratch that do not use monosodium glutamate, preservatives or prepared bases. She also will discuss her new passion for cooking with freeze-dried foods.

Classic food fare gets healthy spin
Take a culinary road trip with chef Paul Onishi, who will prepare healthful versions of all-American classics at a Wellness Cuisine cooking class Sept. 28.
Slated dishes are New England corn chowder, root vegetables from the Midwest, Navajo tacos from the Southwest and fruit cobbler from the South.
The class starts at 6:30 p.m. at Castle Medical Center’s Wellness auditorium, 640 Ulukahiki St. Cost is $15, $20 couples and $10 seniors and students.

Whole Foods aims to help schools
Whole Foods Market’s Whole Kids Foundation is accepting grant proposals from public, private and charter schools, and community gardening organizations, through the end of the year.
The $2,000 grants are meant to increase children’s access to healthful food. Last year, 570 salad bars were installed in schools nationwide, including schools on Oahu, Kauai and Maui.

Wong and Hiura bring isle flavors to Bay Area
Chef Alan Wong and Hawaii food historian Arnold Hiura will take a taste of the islands to the San Francisco Bay Area.
From Oct. 27 to Nov. 2, the duo will offer six events in San Francisco and San Jose that center on the cuisine and food culture of Hawaii. Guests will taste dishes from Wong’s latest book, "The Blue Tomato: The Inspirations Behind the Cuisine of Alan Wong," and classic fare featured in Hiura’s "Kau Kau: Cuisine & Culture in the Hawaiian Islands."
Events range in price from free to $75. They include book signings, a cooking demo and tastings.

Chamber of Commerce benefit goes down on the ‘Bayou’
"Mardi Gras … Let the Good Times Roll" is the theme of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce’s 10th Annual Chopsticks & Wine benefit, to be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
The event brings together the cuisine of restaurants such as Gyotaku, Le Bistro, Mariposa, RumFire Waikiki, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Poke Stop. Diners can also enjoy a wide selection of wine, beer and sake.
There will be a silent auction as well.
