Suspect held in kidnapping and sex assault
Police arrested a 58-year-old Kailua man Thursday morning in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault earlier this month of a 19-year-old-woman.
Police said a man held the woman against her will on Sept. 9 at a Kailua residence.
The suspect was arrested at his North Kainalu Drive home and was being held pending charges of kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault.
Man arrested, freed after kidnap attempt
A 35-year-old Pahoa man accused of trying to kidnap and sexually assault a schoolgirl was released Wednesday night from police custody on Hawaii island.
Officers were dispatched to a report of a girl being confronted at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday by a man in a restroom at Hilo Union Elementary School. The girl escaped, and the man was seen heading toward Haili Street on Kapiolani Street. Officers arrested the man a few hours later on Aupuni Street.
Police and prosecutors indicated that one of the reasons for not charging the suspect was to avoid further trauma to the victim, who would have to testify in open court, face the suspect and be exposed to cross-examination by a defense attorney.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call Detective Daylan Asuncion of the Juvenile Aid Section at 961-8843 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
