Search suspended for man who fell off boat
Coast Guard rescue personnel suspended their search for a 57-year-old man who reportedly fell overboard Saturday morning during a fishing trip about 13 miles south of Waikiki.
The man was first reported to be in the water around 8:50 a.m. A Coast Guard rescue boat and helicopter were dispatched shortly after 9 a.m., and the Coast Guard cutter Galveston Island later joined the effort. A Coast Guard representative said the search, suspended shortly after 7 p.m., will remain so "pending further developments."
Man charged in Makakilo home burglaries
A 25-year-old Makakilo man has been charged after allegedly burglarizing several homes and hitting a police car while trying to evade officers on Friday.
Daven Cummings, of a Makakilo Drive address, was charged Saturday with two counts of unauthorized entry into a dwelling and one count of first-degree criminal property damage. Authorities had earlier contemplated counts of attempted murder, reckless endangering and resisting arrest. Cummings is being held on $90,000 bail.
Police said the suspect broke into three homes and, in the process of fleeing police, hit one police vehicle with an officer in it and forced another police officer who was on foot to duck to avoid being hit.
Paddler dies after canoe flips over
A man died apparently when the canoe he was paddling flipped over in waters off Waikiki Friday morning.
Police said the man, 47, was discovered unresponsive in the water and brought ashore by boaters on a passing catamaran. He was then taken to the hospital by paramedics, police said. There were no signs of foul play.
Family gets help after losing way on trail
Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews assisted a family of four out of the Maunawili Falls hiking trail Friday night.
The couple and two young children lost their way in the darkness and called for help about 7:30 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum. Fire rescue crews found them about 15 minutes into the path, and escorted them out, Lum said.
No one was injured.
Fire scorches brush near golf course
Firefighters put out a brush fire that burned about a quarter of an acre along the Waipahu peninsula Saturday afternoon.
The fire was reported about 1:57 p.m. on Waipahu Depot Road between the city’s Ted Makalena Golf Course and the Waipio Soccer Complex, said Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum.
It was reported under control around 2:50 p.m., he said.
