No. 23 HPU men fall to Grand Canyon, 2-0
Saeed Robinson scored two first-half goals as Grand Canyon beat Hawaii Pacific 2-0 in a Pacific West Conference men’s soccer match Thursday at Atherton Field.
HPU, ranked No. 23 in the NCAA Division II poll, was a man down for a majority of the match after a player was issued two yellow cards.
Grand Canyon is 5-2-1 and 2-1-1. HPU is 7-2 and 4-1.
In the women’s match, Andrea Aguirre and Kaua Wall scored as HPU beat Grand Canyon 2-0.
HPU is 6-1-1 and 4-0-1. Grand Canyon is 3-4-2 and 2-1-1.
Chaminade swept by Dominican in soccer
David Mendez scored in the 75th minute as Dominican beat Chaminade 1-0 in a matchup of winless men’s soccer teams Thursday at San Rafael, Calif.
Dominican is 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 0-8-1 and 0-4-0.
In the women’s match, Dominican scored four first-half goals in a 5-1 victory over Chaminade.
The Silverswords’ Alyssa Nagai scored in the 82nd.
Dominican is 3-5 and 1-3. Chaminade is 1-7 and 1-3.
Miyajima, Kono primed to advance
Wailuku’s Shayna Miyajima fired a 1-under-par 71 in the third round Thursday and is tied for 10th going into today’s final round of the LPGA Stage II Qualifying Tournament in Venice, Fla.
Miyajima, who played on the LPGA Futures Tour, is at 4-under 212 and five shots out of first.
Honolulu’s Stephanie Kono, a three-time All-American at UCLA, is tied for 25th. The Bruins senior shot 71 for the second straight day and is also one of 33 players under par, at 215.
The top 70 and ties after today advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament (Stage III). All other players receive 2012 Futures Tour status.
Hawaii’s Xyra Suyetsugu (74—228) rose to 163rd in the 232-player field Thursday. She is followed by Mari Chun (87—254) and Lisa LaFollette (88—256).
