The first Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East team to finish the regular season did so in impressive fashion.
Kailua clinched a first-round bye in the OIA playoffs, scoring 28 unanswered points to pull off a 28-8 win over visiting Castle on Friday night.
The Surfriders have won four of five after starting the year 0-3 and finished league play 4-2 and in third place.
“This is undisputed third place,” Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. “We know where we are, we don’t know who we’re going to play, but this is a good win and allows us to focus on the playoffs.”
The Surfriders rode running back Jarrin Young to the victory. The 5-foot-7, 170-pound junior rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries.
Kailua won’t play for three weeks, giving Young plenty of time to recover from a hard night’s work.
“I’m a little sore, but (it)feels good,” he said. “Our defense came up big and made a bunch of big plays, which made it easier for (the offense).”
Kailua forced five turnovers, including an interception by Neamitupou Tuifua in the fourth quarter that helped the Surfriders score two touchdowns in 63 seconds.
The Knights scored all eight points on defense as Kailua held Castle to 237 total yards.
Junior Jeremiah Taleni had two of Kailua’s four sacks.
“It was kind of tough because we’d played a bunch of running teams like three weeks in a row,” Taleni said. “We worked our butts off learning new stuff in practice this week and were able to pull it off.”
Both teams committed three turnovers in the first half with Castle’s last coming at the worst time.
Senior linebacker Shane Kalai picked off a pass by Sabu Kekoanui with less than a minute remaining in the first half, returning it 36 yards to the Castle 9-yard line. Three plays later, Young rumbled into the end zone with 9 seconds remaining for a touchdown.
Young followed that up with a successful 2-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8.
“That was huge for us,” Rosolowich said. “The defense did a great job creating turnovers to help our offense get more opportunities.”
Castle outgained Kailua 154 to 1 in the first quarter, taking an 8-0 lead when Jacob Martin recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score.
The Knights also earned a safety when Puni Rapoza tackled Surfriders quarterback Kahaku Iaea in the end zone for the first points of the game.
The Surfriders didn’t complete a pass in the first half, as Young was the only Kailua player to net positive yardage, rushing for 86 yards on 14 carries.
Castle quarterback Kela Shea finished 18-for-27 for 159 yards and two interceptions.

Surfing to become a state sport
The state of Hawaii will announce that it is adding surfing to its list of public high school sports on Monday.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie and professional surfer Carissa Moore are among those expected to announce the change at 11 a.m. by the banyan tree on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.
Surfing was approved as a scholastic sport in Hawaii in 2004, and now surfers are closer to being able to compete for state championships.
